Local directory sites look like a design project and are really a data project. Choosing a theme takes an afternoon. Entering four hundred businesses by hand is what quietly kills the idea a fortnight later.
The import is the whole job
If listings can arrive as a spreadsheet — name, address, category, phone, opening hours — and land in the right fields automatically, a directory that would have taken weeks becomes a weekend. More importantly, updating it stops being a chore you avoid, which is what determines whether the site is still accurate in six months.
Hand-built directories decay. Not because anyone stops caring, but because editing a hundred entries by hand is unpleasant enough that nobody does it, and a directory nobody trusts is worse than none at all.
Rebuildable beats hand-crafted
A directory you can regenerate from a CSV can be pointed at a different town or a different trade without starting again. That is a much better position than one carefully hand-built site you are slightly afraid to touch.
It also changes what you are willing to try. Testing whether a directory works for plumbers in one city is a cheap experiment when the data is a spreadsheet, and an expensive commitment when it is four hundred manually created pages.
Get the categories right before the data
The one part worth slowing down for is your category structure, because it decides both navigation and how the site is found. Categories are difficult to change once hundreds of listings are attached and links point at them.
Sketch it on paper first, with the words people would actually search for rather than the words the trade uses about itself. Everything else in a directory is repairable; this is the part that is annoying to undo.
